The dissertation is devoted to the problem of the Western European scientific schools' on the development of the ethnological knowledge in Ukraine in late 19th cent. - 1920th. The historiography and sources are characterized, as well as main schools and approaches in foreign ethnology and social anthropology are reviewed. The author reveals the methodological approaches to the study of traditional culture in Ukrainian ethnology, main approaches which were applied in the studies on ethnogenesis and people's craftsmenship and arts.
