The thesis surveys the professional development of teachers in American associations. On the basis of the review of national and international documents as well as professional works on professional development the general rational is defined as a career-long process which begins with getting professional knowledge in the educational establishments, accompanied by in-service trainings (induction programs) and participation in professional associations' activities. The research into the work the associations, as communities of devoted professionals, who direct their work to the development of the profession.
