Essay

The thesis is the first special complex research in the Ukrainian Historiography, which is devoted to Oleksandr Karpovych Kasymenko (1905–1971) – a long-term (1947–1964) director of the institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of USSR, his path of life and creative work, and his active part in social and political, and cultural life of Ukraine. The scientific and organizational activities of O. Kasymenko in the context of social and political events of the domestic history of the 40-60s years of the XXth centuries have been analysed and O. Kasymenko’s role in the organization of Ukrainian historical science has been examined. Main aspects of the social and political context of 1920s – 1960s, in which O. Kasymenko’s personality was being formed, his reception of this context and answers the challenges of modernity, his research of the strategy of existence/survival, his relationship with environment have been noted. The author of the thesis has shown a difficult and discordant period of tenure of O. Kasymenko as the director of the institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of USSR, through the reconstruction of relationship between Oleksandr Karpovych and republican party elite of the former Communist Party of the Soviet Union and professional environment of fellows – historians.
