Essay

The dissertation investigates the specificity of poetics and reception / autoreception of the "Diaries" as an integral part of Stephаn Zheromski's literary heritage, the famous Polish writer of the late XIX - early XX century that still remained unexplored by literary critics in full. Diary entries are considered in terms of their belonging to a fiction-documentary genres of literature. The thesis offers the review of the evolution of the diary genre in the history of the Polish literature and the state of existing researches on the "Diaries" by Polish and Ukrainian scholars, as well as highlights the process of self-realization of creative personality, peculiarities of individual creative method and style of S. Zheromski, the peculiarity of his spatial and temporal organization that is observed in the "Diaries" as the original type of diary narrative that combines features of the main directions of development of the diary genre of the nineteenth century. The "Diaries" is a rich and inexhaustible knowledge about the author's biography, his state of mind and the stages of its formation, world-view and value system of the writer. The dissertation determines that the structure of S. Zheromski's diary prose meets the author's concept of life and reflects the writer's standpoint concerning not only himself but also the reader, who should understand the intentions of the author. S. Zheromski stylistic arrangement of the diary narrative is clearly focused on emotionally colored words and it expressively indicates the writer's desire to enrich the prose, to show his sensual perception of natural phenomena and life situations. Since the content of the diary was created spontaneously, we can observe the lack of some literary features and criteria. Nonetheless, we can trace some literary content dominants in the "Diaries". The subject area, the author is interested in, is great, but almost all the topics are directed toward emphasizing the world value and the fleetingness of earth existence.
