Children’s and school student’s periodicals which were established and published in Eastern Ukraine from the late nineteenth century, during the Soviet Ukraine and the Ukrainian Independence is the object of the study. The main goal is to identify the key phases and trends of the process of development of periodicals intended for children's and school student’s audiences in Ukraine from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 21st century (1885–2012).The main methods of study are: concrete historical, diachronic, bibliographic descriptive, comparative and typological, method of monitoring that allows to trace the dynamics of publishing, thematic focus of the mass media, relevance of content to certain age groups. For the first time in the history of journalism the conditions and stages of the formation and development of children's and school student’s periodicals are analyzed, considering different territories of Ukraine in various social and civil formations over a long period, revealing traditions and trends. A number of periodicals that has not yet become the subject of study are revealed in the thesis, concluded in three bibliographies, A number of periodicals that previously were considered «undiagnosed», as well as media for children of ethnic minorities are also included in the historical process.
