Sushko A. Special purpose ceramic products from Kyiv X - XIII century.

The thesis is devoted to the complex analysis and description of special purpose ceramic products from ancient Kyiv-Rus. Included is a review of the scientific literature and a summary of the history of archaeological research in this area. A catalogue was created of special purpose ceramic products which was used as a guideline of for this work. Ceramic products were categorized as follows: four types of light fixtures were designated (bowl lamps, one- or two-level lusters, and closed lamps), two types of pysankas (when the background is brown-black, brown or green) and three types of toys (creative, noise-making and household). Knowledge about manufacturing technology and the organization of technological processes was enriched and improved. Two technical approaches were analyzed, sculptural modeling and machine-hand design. A model was developed of the spatial and chronological distribution of special purpose ceramic products including regions with heavy usage. Possible zones of production were investigated. Reconstruction of the production and use of special purpose ceramic products in ancient Kyiv was made possible by combining research with modern analysis tools.
