Essay

The object of research work is the formation of ethnocultural stereotypes in the British quality press. The aim of candidate's dissertation is determination of structural, functional and substantial characteristics of the process of formation ethnocultural stereotypes in the British quality press. The aim, tasks, specific subject of research led to the choice of appropriate scientific methods (descriptive, induction and deduction , analysis and synthesis, observation).Methods of typological, conceptual and discourse analysis are used for studying media stereotyping too. The novelty of candidate's dissertation includes the following: a new category "ethnocultural media stereotypes" is introduced and theoretically proved according to its main characteristics, internal morphology, formation mechanisms and replication are revealed, functions and value of ethnocultural stereotypes are determined as socio-communicative phenomenon; the effect of tabloidization of the British quality press on the functionality of ethnocultural stereotypes is represented; the typology of ethnocultural media stereotypes is developed, its structural and meaningful features are identified in discourse of the British quality press. It is improved: theoretical concepts of ethnocultural media stereotypes as structural and semantic formative factors of national identity; theoretical bases of xenophobia as media construct; theoretical aspects of stereotypes as cognitive speech phenomena, their functions are revealed in the context of Yakobson's communication scheme. It is further developed: conceptualization ethnocultural media stereotyping in the context of mass media constructing reality and ethnically marked world media representation; theoretical bases "the language of intolerance" as a communicative distance from "other nations". The theoretical value of the candidate's dissertation. The studying of ethnocultural stereotypes in media communicative system is an important aspect of developing theoretical bases of social communication. The results of analysis ethnocultural stereotyping formation in media discourse of the British quality press, grounded theoretical and methodological approaches expand a range of journalistic researches. The practical value of the candidate's dissertation: the results can be used in the development of university courses concerning theory of mass communication, methodology of journalistic creativity, media criticism and media psychology. The sphere of using results and conclusions of the candidate's dissertation is the area of social communications in its scientific and practical aspects.
