Essay

Based on the analysis of the historical and pedagogical literature the state of the research problem and its historiography are analyzed. Theoretical foundations of the research are substantiated at the level of methodological, theoretical, and practical concepts. The study presents the periodization of the foreign language learning process at the universities of Ukraine: the development stage (1804-1850), the stabilization stage (1850-1917). The role of the classical languages in the educational process of Europe (XV - the beginning of the XX century) is analyzed, and, moreover, the foreign language component in the educational institutions of Ukraine since their establishment is studied. Based on the analysis of the methodological provision the study examines the organization of foreign language learning at the universities of Ukraine at the development and stabilization stages. The forms, methods and means of learning and teaching foreign languages are defined and characterized as well as the peculiarities of the teaching staff at the universities of Ukraine under the Russian and Austrian Empires in the XIX - the beginning of the XX century.
