Its current state in educational theory and practice is investigated. The theoretical analysis of the basic concepts of the research is conducted. The development of professional competence of teachers is defined as a natural and purposeful process of qualitative changes in the system of professionally important personal characteristics and motives, psychological and pedagogical knowledge, habits and skills that facilitate teacher's readiness to be engaged in educational work and provide a high level of self-discipline. Structural components of professional competence of teachers of natural science subjects (motivational, cognitive, active, personal-reflexive) are proved.
