The thesis presents a theoretical generalization and substantiates a new approach for solving important and actual problems which lies in revealing and uncovering of the tendencies of the development of pedagogical discussions on teaching ancient languages in the national gymnasium education during the late nineteenth - early twentieth century. It was found the content of pedagogical discussions on teaching ancient languages in gymnasium education (second half of XIX - beginning of XX century). The peculiarities of the debates about the place of Latin and Greek grammar in the gymnasium teaching process of the defined period were determined. The stages of educational discussions on ancient languages in the context of educational reforms of the late nineteenth - early twentieth century were grounded. It was improved and expanded the scientific understanding of educational reform, regulatory framework on the one hand, and on the other hand, it was clarified the importance of discussion for the general development and differentiation of the educational system in the country. Further development acquired: the characteristics of program and methodological and staffing providing; clarifying the peculiarities of system of gymnasium education.
