Essay

The dissertation deals with the peculiarities of the inner form and meaning of idioms and similes denoting human mental features. For the first time providing a comprehensive analysis of such set phrases in Ukrainian, English and German, the author focuses primarily on their ideographic, semantic and motivational characteristics, tracing relationships between them. Proceeding from the traditional ideographic classification of relevant human properties (Ratio, Emotio, Ethos (Mos), Voluntas), the author elucidates the way this conceptual scheme is reflected in the respective fragments of the phraseological world picture of the three languages. Each pre-selected thematic group within the general phrase-semantic field of human psyche is analyzed from the viewpoint of inner form determining the individual denotative meaning of each phrase as well as the connotative content associated with it. In doing so, the author establishes general and specific as well as more or less recurrent types of underlying motivation, and also cross-linguistic and cross-cultural correspondences, thus showing how cultural patterns, in particular those found in thematic semiotic codes and precedent texts (such as the Bible), influence the phraseological interpretation of human mentality.
