Essay

Author analizes publicistic discourse, which took place on the pages of Polish immigrant journal "Kultura" ("Culture"). She pays special attention on covering Ukrainian aspect of this discussion. Journalists of "Kultura" supported Ukrainian independence, as an inevitable factor of establishing democracy in the Central and Eastern Europe. They provoked discussion on this problem in Polish and Soviet mass media. In general, we can name three "Kultura" main objectives that lined the editorial policy of the magazine: cause changes at the level of mental consciousness of Poles by criticizing mistakes made in the policy of the interwar period, which issued intolerant attitude towards national minorities in Poland and the opposition; struggle against the totalitarian regimes, which established in the countries - members of the Socialist bloc; working on future concepts on relationship between Poland and neighboring countries in a free Europe. Evaluating the performance of these tasks from the standpoint of modern Ukrainian-Polish relations, we can conclude that the the tasks were filfilled.
