Cherchovych I. Women in Galician Ukrainians public and private life in the second part of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century

Object: Ukrainian women in Galicia of the second half of XIX – early XX century in their various roles: wife, mother, public figures, workers, individuals with their own views on life and the baggage of ideas, ideals and stereotypes of their environment. Objective: to investigate the situation, status and roles of women in Ukrainian society of Galicia of the second half XIX – early XX century, to establish the factors of forming gender relations and the construction of female characters, to find out how the idea of women's emancipation changed the traditional ideas about a woman's place in the family and society and influenced on the representations of themselves women about their interests and life goals. Methods: analysis and synthesis, generalization, critical, descriptive, problem-thematic, statistical, prosopographic, retrospection, gender analysis, historical comparativistics and microhistory. Results: for the first time in the center of a separate research delivered a combination of private and public spheres of women life in Ukrainian society of Galicia of the second half XIX – early XX century, elucidated the attitude and contribution of women in social activities of men, their professional and political career, highlighted the social interpretations of mixed marriages and shows the problems that arose in the family under pressure of exacerbation of national controversies, examined the designing of women's roles and images in journalistic and literary texts and their relation to everyday practices, outlined the models of female roles in families of different social strata, improved the methodic of women past research in Ukrainian society of Galicia of the second half of XIX – early XX century by applying of modern methodological approaches, including gender analysis. Scope of use: for further study of the history of women in Galicia of the second half XIX – early XX century, writing of the summarizing research on women's and gender studies, development of courses and seminars.
