Essay

Based on a wide circle of sources and scientific literature, this thesis comprises complex research of apotropes and norms in the everyday life of Ukrainians of Polesie (end of 19th - beginning of 21st century). The author specifies the notion of symbolic defense-a systemic formation based on symbolic reglamentation of human interaction with the world in the process of protection from possible threats. A. Nikolaieva suggests variants of defining and classifying apotropes and norms as active and passive components. The author goes on to reveal special aspects of transformation of symbolic defense in the everyday life of Ukrainians of Polesie from the end of 19th century to the beginning of 21st century influenced by migration processes, urbanization, scientific and technological advances, and the pluralization of the cultural field.
