Pahiria A. Activities of Ukrainian SSR intelligentsia in the area of environmental protection (second half of 1940th - first half of 1980th).

In the paper a comprehensive research of role of Ukrainian Soviet intelligentsia in the environmentalist movement of the second half of 1940th - first half of 1980th is made, basing on analyses of historiography, archival sources, published documents and media materials. Main areas, forms and methods of activities of Ukrainian SSR intelligentsia are analyzed in foundation and boosting functional capacity of network of natural reservations, engagement in ecological non-governmental organizations, as well as in promotion of ecological knowledge. The social role of intelligentsia in environmental movement within the totalitarian state is defined. Contribution of certain ecologists, scientists, civic activists, journalists into signaling environmental problems before the state and society in the Ukrainian SSR is revealed. Activities of ecological non-governmental organizations in the USSR of 1940-1980th are researched (The Ukrainian society of environmental protection (UTOP), Ukrainian society of hunters and anglers (UTMR), "Nature" universities etc.). Main stages of Soviet policy in environmental protection of postwar decades and building of natural reservations on the territory of Ukrainian SSR are traced.
