Essay

The dissertation presents a multifaceted analysis of the Italian press in the 1920s-1930s through the prism ofthe 'journalist vs. totalitarian state' relationships. With the view to amultilateralcoverage of the subject, research of this historical and theoretical problem has been conducted in a maximum of different sections. The press - prior to and following - the total liquidation of the freedom of speech in the country (1926) has been taken into consideration; in Italy and in emigration, within the legal information space of fascist Italy and beyond; the press as apropagandist tool at the service of the regime and that as an independent creator of a publicistic discourse formally under control of the state only. The representatives of all notable ideologies existing in interwar Italy have gone underresearch. The Ukrainian component in the Italian press, viz. publicists born on the territory of Ukraine and included in the Italian journalistic process - A. Kuliscioff, A. Balabanoff, L. Ginsburg, E. Onatsky - has been dealt with, too.
