Essay

The thesis is devoted to the study of the development of foreign language education in the secondary schools of the Kyiv school district. The dissertation deals with historical and pedagogical analysis and archival materials. Historiographical periods and stages of the development of foreign language education have been singled out. Peculiаrities of origin and development of different types of secondary schools in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are analyzed. The system of laws, political and pedagogical conditions that had influenced their development was examined. The peculiarities of the process of teaching ancient and new foreign languages in different secondary schools of the Kyiv school district have been analyzed. School curricula and syllabi were considered and attention was focused on the use of foreign language teaching method. Some possibilities of the creative use of the historical experience concerning organization, contents and methodology of teaching foreign languages have been considered.
