Object -physical education curriculum for pupils; purpose - to improve physical education for pupils of 5th-9th grades by applying curriculum with optional modules; methods - analysis and generalization of scientific, methodological literature and official documents; sociological methods (questionnaire of physical educators and schoolchildren of 5th -9th grades); pedagogical methods (observation and experiment) mathematical statistics methods; novelty - effectiveness of physical education curriculum based on the principle of optional modules for 5th-9th grades was theoretically grounded and experimentally tested; rationality of optional modules combination in the curriculum was experimentally approved; ways of improving professional preparedness of physical educators for implementing the curriculum; results - basic features of physical training curriculum implementation during 1991-2014 were outlined; problems of national education system in the late twentieth century were revealed; reasons of physical education reform were outlined; tasks, comparative analysis and characteristics of physical education in Ukraine and European countries, where curriculum is based on the principle of optional modules, were presented; scientists expressed ambiguous attitude to the development and implementation of a training program based on facultative modules, which confirmed the need for experimental verification of the effectiveness of the curriculum and the rational use of such modules in physical education. Positive attitude of physical educators towards the curriculum and 5th-9th grades pupils towards physical education based on optional modules was established; factors that prevent introduction of facultative modules regarding the interests of pupils were discovered; significant improvements in physical fitness of students were observed, which confirms the efficiency of the training program, based on the principle of optional modules; the most effective way of combining the optional component of the curriculum for the development of physical qualities was found; specialization - physical education and sports.
