Essay

On the basis of documentary sources the thesis thoroughly explores the social-anthropological aspect of pilgrimage to the Kyiv Orthodox shrines in XVIIIth century. The research analyzes the structural components of the process of pilgrimage to Kyiv, defines an interpretation of the active stage of pilgrimage. This paper determines the range of motives and expectations that prompted people to go on a pilgrimage; explores an impact of social and political conditions of the XVIIIth century to the opportunity of pilgrimage by representatives of different social groups. The research defines the quantitative dynamics of the pilgrimage during the calendar year and over the XVIIIth century. The thesis explores social and professional characteristics of the secular pilgrims; shows the specifications of pilgrimage made by monks and priests; analyzes geographical aspects of pilgrimage; characterizes the main offerings from pilgrims.
