Research object - public opinion of Ukraine in the second half of the XVIII - the first half of the XIX c. Goal - complex reproduction of representations of Ukrainian Cossacks in the public opinion in the second half of the XVIII - the first half of the XIX c. Methods: the general scientific (analysis, synthesis) and specially-scientific methods (historical-genetic, historical-comparative). For the first time in historical science are formulated and discussed in detail with the racurs of intellectual history problems of ideas about the history and the real state of the Ukrainian Cossacks of the second half XVIII - first half of XIX c.; comprehensively analyzed the regional variants of Cossacks' self-image in the second half of the XVIII c.; problem of presentationin in public opinion the "Little Russian Cossacks" as a real social community are illuminated; revealed features of perception by contemporaries ideas about heredity of the Zaporozhye Cossacks and the Chornomorsky Cossacks; the level of everyday knowledge about the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks in the social opinion of the end of XVIII - first half of XIX c. is identified; the features of the formation scientific Cossack-studies problem field are defined.
