Essay

The thesis is devoted to the pedagogical and educational activities of Ivan Luchytskyi (1845-1918) who was a teacher and an educator, an editor and a publisher, a scientist and an active public figure. The investigation is the integrated research that is firstly presented in the theory and practice of modern science. The main factors influencing the scientist's and educator's outlook formation are determined in the study, such as: ethnic and social environment the scientist originated from, his father's communication with local specialists in Hebrew studies, rabbis, his mother's loyal attitude to national traditions, impact of education of educational institutions that Ivan Luchytskyi graduated from (Kamianets-Podilskyi Male Gymnasium, Kiev First Male Gymnasium, St. Volodymyr Kyiv University), influence of prominent public figures, creative heritage of Ukrainian and foreign scientists, scientific and research activity on the history studying of different world countries and Malorosia history, acquaintance and cooperation with well-known foreign public and cultural leaders. The main stages of I. Luchytskyi's pedagogical and educational activities have been determined on the basis of scientist's outlook and activity changes were found out, such as: 1) the stage of educator's outlook and personality formation (1845-1869); 2) the beginning of active pedagogical and educational activities (1869-1904); 3) the stage of initiative political activity (1904-1914); 4) the period of isolated creative work (1915-1918). The analysis of the content and directions of I. Luchytskyi's educational activity allowed distinguishing that it was characterised by national and humanistic orientation and active life position as it was aimed to the spiritual development and self-identification of the Ukrainian people by means of national education. It has been defined that in the condition of continuous limitations and the native language prohibition the educator actively fought for language's legalization and its implementation in various spheres of Ukrainian people's life, but firstly to the use of mother tongue at schools. It is distinguished that I. Luchytskyi's educational activity was closely connected with cultural and educational, public and charitable activities as the scientist presented public lectures, actively contributed to charitable organizations in Kiev and other cities to help low-income students, Jewish pupils, workers' children, orphans, the society housing and everyday life conditions of the working class in Kyiv and other cities improvement, participated in the developing of the Public Auditorium in Kiev, supported the women's movement for the right for higher education receiving. The scientist's educational activity was characterised by his editorial and publicity work which influenced greatly on the activity. Since late 1970s I. Luchytskyi had worked in many daily newspapers and magazines such as "Znanie" ("Knowledge"), "Slovo" ("Word"), "Zorya" ("Dawn"), "Kievskayastarina" ("Kyiv's antiquity"), "Gromadskadumka" ("Public opinion"), "Reforma" ("Reform"), "Kievskieotkliki" ("Kyiv's responses"), "Istoricheskiyvestnik" ("History bulletin"), "Otechestvennyiezapiski" ("Domestic transaction"), "Golosminuvshego" ("Voice of the past"), "Universitetskieizvestiya" ("University news"), "Ustoy" ("Buttress"), "Zemskiysobor" ("Assembly of the Land"), "Russkoebogatstvo" ("Russian wealth"). He was the editor of the newspapers "Kievskieotkliki" ("Kyiv's responces"), "IzvestiyaKievskoygorodskoydumyi" ("The news of Kyiv city council"), "Svoboda ipravo" ("Freedom and law"). It has been distinguished that I. Luchytskyi expressed the national idea as a component of educational content and learning process including such obligatory requirements as: the necessity of education improvement through the supporting and realizing of education's importance for the society development, the usage of developed scientific and reasonable methods in the educational process, formation of educational process in accordance with principles of nature appropriateness and nationality, ensuring a high professional level of a high school teacher, which the educator understood: the obtaining of teaching methods and learning material by the teacher, having high level of general knowledge, expressing respect and cultural behaviour in communication with students, expressing of own opinion, ability to enrich the program material with additional scientific information to expand students' knowledge. I. Luchytskyi also realized the necessity of female education, the usage of foreign educational experience in the practice of the national school to adapt and implement the best educational achievements of developed countries, especially France and Germany (this activity formed "the scientist's creative laboratory" in which I. Luchytskyi shared his experience, knowledge and methodology of the study with his students, where he created scientific schools and developed research areas), the usage of scientifically developed and reasonable methods in the educational process.
