The thesis investigates the process and the main stages of the formation and development of the philological disciplines at the Imperial University of St. Vladimir. The department formation of Classical philology and its stuff have been researched. The place of foreign languages in the university system of education has been observed. Special attention has been paid to the lives and scientific heritage of those linguists who haven't been thoroughly studied in the previous literature. The process of introduction and evolution of the related disciplines of European literature and Eastern languages has been comprehensively studied. The role of Slavic philology department and its stuff have been analyzed. The birth of Romance and German philology and the creation of its department have been researched. Particular attention has been paid to the introduction of subject system at the university at the beginning of XX century.
