The thesis is devoted to complex research of рress of the 21st century in the context of the latest trends of media system. Theoretical approaches to the study of media research of Western and European scientists are described and the typology of press in scientific discourse is systematized. Theoretical and methodological principles and basic concepts of scientific reflection on the periodical press as an object of study are defined. Features of contemporary sociocultural reality and specificity of the press as a sociocultural phenomenon are formulated. A comparative analysis of transformation processes of functions media, journalism and the press is done. A new stage of development of the press, which is accompanied by the emergence of media convergence and online journalism, is studied. Trends of press are examined in the light of processes and phenomena of the post-industrial information society.
