Humeniuk O. Creation of source breeding material of winter wheat when using global collection

The object of research - the identification of new sources of breeding valuable traits of bread winter wheat for use in breeding programs and characteristics of manifestations of the main agronomic - breeding traits in the initial material of various hybrid generations. The purpose of research - to create initial material for breeding wheat based on identified promising sources of agronomic traits from the gene pool of the new collection samples from around the world in Forest-steppe of Ukraine. The thesis covers results of comprehensive studying bread winter wheat collection samples on provocative backgrounds. It permitted to identify samples with varying degree of resistance against pathogens of leaf rust, septoria leaf blotch, and powdery mildew. The best of them are involved in crossbreeding aimed to creating new breeding material with more genetic diversity in regard to disease resistance. When breeding for winter hardiness the hybrids with one of the parental forms being characterized by high winter hardiness are the most perspective. With the participation of collectible samples new winter wheat varieties have been developed and listed in the State Register of plant varieties suitable for dissemination in Ukraine, namely: Lehenda myronivs'ka, Oberih myronivs'kyi, Berehynia myronivs'ka, and Horlytsia myronivs'ka that are characterized by high yielding capacity, improved grain quality and resistance to extreme growing conditions.
