The explanatory dictionaries of the Russian language of the 14th-21st have been used to study the typology of ways of defining nominative units with different structure and, thus, to introduce new ways of word semantization (symbolic) and phrase semantization (equivalent structure; non-equivalent structure; object description; situation description; symbolic, genre and pragmatic); to show the evolution of the object described in Russian lexicography along with the ways of its semantization; to identify the information type given in the explanatory part of the dictionary entry at various stages of Russian lexicography development. The thesis develops a new typology of winged words and phrases according to the architectonic role of their prototypes in the source text; discusses different principles of defining onomastic and non-onomastic formations; examines the metalanguage for eptonym definitions; determines the amount and quality of information required to define units with simple sentence structure and complex sentence structure as well as with the structure above the sentence level; specifies the amount of information given in dictionary entries of winged words and phrases; improves the methods of identifying differentiation features of the object explained.
