Essay

A significant array of published and archival historical sources is used to investigate social, legal and cultural aspects of Jews-foreigners’ life and activity in the South of Ukraine of the late XVIII – early XX centuries. The reasons for the migration of Jews-foreigners to the Southern Ukraine from the end of XVIII to the beginning of the XX centuries are examined. Their legal status in the Russian Empire and its changes over time is revealed. Social characteristics (demographic composition and its dynamics, especially the social and professional structure) of Jews-foreigners are analyzed. Their contribution to the economic development of the South of Ukraine is determined. The processes of cultural transformation of the Jews of the Kherson province during the XIX century are analyzed and the leading role of Jews of foreign origin is shown.
