Levchenko H. The newspaper «Odessa Herald» (1827–1894): contribution to the development of local history in the south of Ukraine

Through the example of the periodical the contribution of the periodical press into formation and development of regional studies is analysed in the research, which is based on a wide range of various sources and investigation of scientific heritage. The process of birth of the periodical press in the South of Ukraine is explored. The role of the local administration in the birth of newspaper periodicals is considered. The trends, which accompanied the development of periodical press in the conditions of strict censorship are outlined. It is stated that for a long time the newspaper was the only one printed authority in Odessa, which played a great role in making local history researches popular. The evolution of the newspaper in the conditions of a strict competition with the other periodicals is traced.
