Essay

The dissertation deals with the study of the historical aspect of the process of Ukrainian banking system functioning at the end of the 20th - beginning of the 21st century and its influence on socio-economic and socio-political life of Ukraine. The level of the scientific elaboration of the topic and the source base of the research have been analyzed. It has been determined that the subject hasn't been investigated in historical literature, and therefore it is relevant. The source base is sufficiently representative and reliable for conducting full and comprehensive scientific research on the topic. The structure of Ukrainian banking system, legal basis for its functioning, its financial and human resources capacity have been analyzed. The legal basis for its functioning was created in the late 1990s. It was found that the banking system of Ukraine was a two-level transitional model. The first level was the National bank of Ukraine which had the branched structure, constructed by the principle of centralization with vertical subordination; the second level consisted of state-owned and private commercial banks. The level of its financial resources and qualified personnel in general was satisfactory and sufficient for normal functioning.
