Taking into consideration the achievements of home historiography and on the basis of comprehensive analysis of a wide range of representative sources, the part of which is put in to scientific practice for the first time, the research results of the gender transformation processes in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 1991-2011 are presented in the thesis. The factors that affected the gender policy in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and determined its alterations at different stages of military development in Ukraine are discovered. The characteristics and features of women military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 1991-2011 are considered, the authors division into periods is suggested and justified. The motivation of women to serve in the Ukrainian army at definite historical periods is explained. The essential directions and results of the activity of military-political state authorities as to ensuring equal rights and capabilities for servicemen and servicewomen are discovered. The specificity of women training in the Higher Military Institutions as well as the participation of Ukrainian Servicewomen in international operations to support peace and security are revealed. As a result of the undertaken investigation conclusions and recommendations on application of the obtained results in the on-going process of military development in Ukraine are provided.
