Pidhrushna O. Recreation of English humour in Ukrainian literary translation.

The thesis is a comprehensive study on the characteristics of humour recreation in the English-Ukrainian literary translation framework. It gives a description of specific features of the English and Ukrainian humour determined by linguistic and cultural characteristics from the perspective of translation studies, highlights the urgent theoretical problem of foreign humour recreation in the literary works and raises the complex issue of translatability in general and borders of translatability of foreign humour in particular. Specifics of recreation of English situational humour, verbal humour and humour with ethno-cultural component in the Ukrainian language within the framework of a literary text are analysed. The reasons for the loss of humour in the process of translation are examined, the general methods and techniques for its successful recreation are distinguished. Humour in the literary texts is studied in the aspect of its translatability, the basic difficulties of humour translation, the limits of its translatability and factors affecting the translatability of humour in fiction are defined.
