Essay

In this dissertation research based on the analysis of archival documents a comprehensive study of the history of the OUN in Ternopil province is made for the first time in published sources and scientific literature. Author proposes a new approach to the classification of OUN historiography. There are four areas singled out: apologetic, negative, affirmative, neutral. Representatives of apologetic approach interpret the history of the OUN only in a positive manner. Representatives of negative approach propose the outdated concept and policy evaluation. Affirmative trend has developed among Ukrainian historians consider the OUN to be an adequate expression of the Ukrainian people, but use critical approach to the history of OUN as well. Neutral direction are the most representative in national terms (Ukrainian, Polish, American researchers). These authors try to examine the phenomenon of OUN as objectively as possible. The study shows social and political movement in Ternopil Province, establishes the prerequisites of OUN, analyzes the creation and activities of SUNM and UVO, their structure and leadership. OUN considered a high priority to gain influence on legal organization. Nationalists saw them as a medium for the formation of new staff for the underground movement. OUN demonstrated high motivation in 1929-1939 and got more and more supporters and activists among legal organizations. Structural and institutional model of OUN was borrowed from UVO, and ideological and cultural ideas produced by representatives of the younger generation, most of whom came from the SUNM. In the dissertation the progress of pacification in Ternopil province is analyzed, violent actions of Polish authorities using the military and police forces to civilians are displayed. The pacification of the Ukrainian population in Ternopil province became a vivid evidence of the dominant strategy of the Polish ruling elite - to solve problems of national minorities by violent force. The author is reproduced a structure of the district and county Executive Board (EB), established management team and the strength of the OUN in Ternopil province. The dissertation reveals the names and positions of several dozens of OUN leaders of various levels, from village leaders to the heads of the EB. The number of OUN in Ternopil province at the beginning of the struggle was around three-four hundreds and at the end of 1930's not less than two thousands, including supporters and members of OUN Youth. The author is characterized OUN's propaganda and military actions and its fighting with the Polish authorities. The content of propaganda and publishing of the OUN was marked by very negative and categorical tone in relation to Polish state and showed varying degrees of emotional stress. The author found a lot of OUN propaganda materials that touch various topics from criticism of Ukrainian political parties to the calls for independence. He traced two main vectors in the power struggle of OUN - against police and economical. Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists in the 1929-1939 was a military-political structure which purpose was to restore the independents of Ukrainian state. OUN in the interwar period in Ternopil province in the 1929-1939 was the systematic historical phenomenon, an integral part of a long-term phenomenon of Ukrainian liberation nationalism, which began to form from creation of the UVO through the OUN and resulted in the UPA struggle.
