Object:physical education of youth in Ukraine in the second half of XIX – beginning of XX C.; purpose: to identify the characteristics and trends of formation and development of physical education of youth in the South of Ukraine, to outline the possibilities of using historical and pedagogical experience in modern conditions; methods: the problem-chronological method, method of periodization, a content analysis of literature sources and archive materials to play the theory and practice of physical education in a time sequence; synthesis, comparison, generalization, systematization for the interpretation of factual material; novelty: the specifics and main trends of formation and development of physical education in the South of Ukraine in the second half of XIX – early XX century, a systematic theoretical ideas and generalizes the practical experience of physical education in the region; results: improved approaches to the definition of historical background of the formation and development of physical education in the South of Ukraine in the regional dimension; the scientific unknown and little-known historical and pedagogical sources
