Object: professional preparation of a future music teacher in terms of a higher educational institution; aim: to substantiate theoretically and experimentally test the functional model of the design skills of future music teachers during their professional training; methods: analysis, comparison, systematization, generalization of scientific, pedagogical, psychological and methodological literature, modeling, questioning, testing, solving practical problems, pedagogical supervision, pedagogical experiment, methods of mathematical statistics; novelty: for the first time the functional model of a future music teacher design skills' forming during the professional training was theoretically grounded and tested, which consists of the theoretical and analytical, educational, organizational, and final-effective stages; the criteria (personal, cognitive modeling) and indicators were determined and the levels (high, sufficient, medium, low) of the future music teacher design skills' forming were characterized; pedagogical conditions of the future music teacher design skills' forming during the professional training were characterized (orientation of the professional disciplines' contents, of the training and production practices on design skills' forming, selection of forms and methods of teaching and learning activities aimed at the design skills' development, the use of interdisciplinary connections to create the design skills while teaching professional disciplines); the essence of the concept of "designing ability of a future music teacher" was specified; the ideas of forming the design skills aimed at improving the professional training of future music teachers, namely approaches, stages, content, methods, and forms were further developed.
