Essay

The Soviet legacy is the analytical concept, used in the research to characterize the complex of cultural objects and phenomena, which have Soviet origin in modern Ukrainian cultural space. This concept includes both physical remains of the Soviet past (heritage) - monuments, artworks, buildings and cultural practices of the Soviet origin (legacy) - holidays, traditions, symbols. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, former Soviet republics inherited a wide range of instruments of memory politics and ideological indoсtrination: monuments, memorials, holidays, symbols, rituals, street and city names. The choice of treatment strategies with the Soviet past determined their destiny in each of the post-Soviet countries. Some of them were destroyed or erased, some - adapted without losing its symbolic and ideological values, others - haven't disappeared, but lost or changed their symbolic meaning.
