The dissertation analises the existant histrical research. The evolution of the historical topography of Chernihiv in the XIV-XVIII centuries is comprehensively researched based on the documentary, artefactual and pictoral evidence. The role of natural landscape, hydrographic situation and topographical features of previous epochs as factors in the creation of urban space had been outlined. The dissertations describes the development of defensive fortifications of the Upper Castle and the city Fortress from the 14th to the 18th centuries, as well as discussing their common and distinctive features. Furthermore, the influence of the fortifications on the formation of the city during the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Moscow State, the Polish Commonwealth, Cossack Hetmanate and the Russian Empire are examined. The role of each of the fortified parts of Chernihiv are determined in relation to the layout of the rest of the city. The dissertation obtained information about the fortres's developments and the formation of its street system.
