Essay

The thesis is devoted to the research of Ukrainian sokil movement in Galicia from 1890 to 1930-ies. Activities of sokil organizations of Austro-Hungarian Empire in the second half of XIX century and their influence on creation of Ukrainian "Sokil" are analyzed in the research. Reasons of creation of sokil societies and influence of Czech and Polish sokil movements on rise of Ukrainian "Sokil" are analyzed. The history of Ukrainian Sokil society is a distinctive direction of national liberation movement of Ukrainians from Galicia, which appeared at the end of XIX century and during the time of its existence and operation had become a noticeable phenomenon in the history of the development of West-Ukrainian lands. Ukrainian Sokil is a medium of physical and mental education of West-Ukrainian people at the end of XIX - at the beginning of XX centuries. Gymnastic and sport activity of Ukrainian Sokil Organizations was a necessary prerequisite of consolidation of Eastern Galicia Ukrainians, and was able to prepare Ukrainians for a fight for Ukrainian statehood by means of physical education. However, gymnastic and sport activity was not the only factor of education of West-Ukrainian population. One of Lviv Sokil leaders, I. Bobersjkyi, emphasized that physical training is a path to mental training. Influence of socio-political process, which took place on Western Ukrainian lands at the end of XIX century, on rise and development of sokil movement is discovered. It is pointed out that Ukrainian "Sokil", rising in accordance with Czech and Polish example, borrowed only name and organizational structure from the neighbor nations.
