Essay

Thesis is devoted to the history of Stanislaviv diocese of the Ukrainian Byzantine-rite Catholic Church during the clandestine period (1946-1989). The process of the UBCC liquidation at the Lviv Pseudoassembly in 1946 is observed, that caused the destruction of religious centers of Catholicism of the Eastern rite on the territory of Stanislaviv diocese. The action on "reunification" in the diocese took place extremely slowly due to the resistance of the nationalist clandestine and bishop H. Khomyshyn's latinization activity. It is established that local officials informed about the cessation of the UBCC activity in the diocese. However, the implementation of the decisions passed at Lviv Assembly lasted for several years due to resistance of the Greek-Catholic clergy, monasticism and the faithful. The transition to the Orthodoxy by the most priests was a simple formality. In fact, in all temples, the Greek Catholic inventory was preserved, which only indirectly testified formal transition to the Orthodox rite. A campaign on closure of monasteries on the territory of all Stanislaviv congregation was organized during 1946-1950, which took place gradually and consisted of 4 stages: collecting information about the monasteries and the number of monks and nuns; imposing of religious buildings with excessive tax burdens; "Consolidation" of the monasteries and their final elimination.
