Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the comprehensive study of the position of the Roman-catholic church in Podillya Region in conditions of the Soviet religious policy in the 1920s. The dissertation is based on the analysis of a wide range of archival sources, most of which were introduced into the scientific research for the first time. Historiographical material proves that this problem has not been investigated enough. The dissertation defines the organizational structure of the Roman-catholic church in Podillya and offers quantitative data on the spiritual clergy and churches network. It also investigates the problem of the number and the issue of the national-religious identity of the roman-catholic population of Podillya, paying particular attention to a segregated category of population - "ukrainian-catholics". It investigates the peculiarities and mechanism of the anti-religious propaganda against the Roman-catholic church in Podillya in the 1920s, conducted by the Soviet authorities, and analyzes Soviet interpretation of the content of Christianity as well as religious holidays and ceremonies.
