The dissertation researches the introduction and evolution of the volost governance system, the composition and activities of the representative and executive organs in Right-bank Ukraine as well as regional peculiarities of their functioning during the post-reform period. Volost is a traditional administrative subdivision in Eastern Europe, part of a provincial district (povit). Among other things, the procedures of preparation and practical implementation of normative acts. The work of the volost court, which was a class judiciary organ for peasantry, has been analyzed and summarized. Moreover, the problems of status and duties of volost officials have been thoroughly examined. The focus lies on two key figures among them: the volost chief and volost clerk (scriber). The 'Polish' factor and its influence on the rotation mechanism of the volost officials across the administrative units of Right-bank Ukraine has been given special attention in this research.
