Barkov I. Institute of prostitution in the cities of Southern Ukraine in 1843–1914

The object of research: the Institute of prostitution in the territory of Southern Ukraine during the Russian Empire. The aim of research: study of the history of the Institute of prostitution in the cities of Southern Ukraine in the period of its existence during 1843-1914. The subject of research: mechanisms, forms, and extent of the existence of the Institute of prostitution in Southern Ukraine in 1843-1914. The results of research and novelty: the causes that influenced the birth of prostitution in the cities have been revealed. The social type of prostitutes, owners of brothels, pimps and clients have been characterized. The period of legalization of prostitution and features of its formation in Southern Ukraine have been analyzed. The effectiveness of administrative and sanitary control in the regions of the city has been studied. The trends in relation to the Institution of prostitution of all-Russian and local authorities have been observed, regularities and differences have been revealed. The specificity of the influence of the Institution of prostitution on the everyday life of the cities of Southern Ukraine has been determined. Specific features in the location of brothels, which, in turn, influenced the development or degradation of individual parts of cities, have been set. The sphere of usage: further development of research subjects, writing of generalizing works, textbooks, while lecturing the history of Ukraine in the university.
