Essay

This thesis is devoted to the study of physical education development and students’ sports training of non-sports specialties in higher pedagogical educational institutions of Ukraine in 1944–1991. The thesis offers the systematized historiographical and source base. The stages of physical education and sports development in higher educational institutions of Ukraine in the study period are reasoned: the first period 1944–1947 – military physical training; the second period 1948–1958 – sports physical training; the third period 1959–1984 – general physical training; the fourth period 1985–1991 – health-oriented physical training. The essence of physical education and sport in the system of higher education as a scientific and pedagogical problem is determined; the groups of scientific literature are singled out and characterized in accordance with the study of physical education and sports in the system of higher education. It was proved in the thesis that in the singled out groups of works the specificity of the physical education of the future teachers was realized due to the analysis of those skills and qualities which are necessary for the professional activity (in particular, such organization and instruction skills as drawing up a plan of sports-and-recreational activity; preparing students to participate in competitions for the championship of the class and school; conducting physical education and recreation activities in the school day schedule; control of the hygienic condition of the premises and the posture of children; healthy lifestyle popularization among students and parents). The process of normative legal principles formation, structural and content priorities of educational and extracurricular work on physical education and sport in higher educational institutions of Ukraine are grounded in the study period. The organization of educational and extracurricular work on physical education and sports in pedagogical educational institutions of Ukraine has been described. An analytical review of the physical education departments activities has been conducted. The prospects of using the achievements of physical education and sports training of students in higher pedagogical educational institutions of Ukraine of the studied period in modern conditions are outlined.
