Essay

The dissertation thoroughly investigates the process of the formation of national unity conception on the pages of the Ukrainian periodicals of Northern Bukovyna in 1885–1930. In accordance with the goals and objectives of the study, attention is focused on the origin of the idea of unity, starting from the works of T. Shevchenko, the activity of the members of the Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood, the nationalistic-oriented people from Halychyna and Bukovyna, until the advent of the works by Yu. Bachynskyi, I. Franko, M. Mikhnovskyi, M. Hrushevskyi, D. Dontsov, the establishment of the Russo-Ukrainian radical party (1890) in Lviv and the Revolutionary Ukrainian Party (1900) in Kharkiv. The study clarifies the interpretation of the key concept «unity» on the basis of the scientific sources on philology, political science, and philosophy. As a result, it points out that «unity» is a diverse concept and should be treated not only as a geographical, territorial unity of Ukrainian lands but also as a spiritual unification of the Ukrainian nation with compulsory political independence. For the selection of printed materials and their analysis, we suggest two groups of markers regarding the problems of unity: 1) problem-thematic; 2) editorial and publishing, promotional.
