The scientific and methodological foundations of the socio-geographical research of the recreational economy of the region are revealed, including the conceptual-terminological apparatus of the study, which reveals the definitions of «recreation», «detention», «recreational potential», «recreational and tourist resources», reveals the properties, functions and structure of the recreational economic complex of the region, the methods and methods of research are outlined.

Principles and methods of estimation of recreational potential of the region are developed on the basis of the concept of geographic destinations; the substantiated methodical scheme of the integrated and integrated assessment of the recreational potential of the region, which combines all the resource components of the recreational economy – natural conditions and resources, socio-historical tourist resources, socio-economic situation, the existing network of recreational infrastructure and enterprises of the tourism industry.
The work substantiates the representation of recreational activity as a recreational inter-branch complex; characterizes its functional and organizational structure, main directions of social and geographical research.
The methodical scheme of research of the territorial organization of recreational economy of the region is developed; justified the taxonomy of the constituent parts of the territorial organization of recreational activities, which fully covers all types of recreation and tourism, and preserves the benefits of the concept of geographical discoveries as to the integrated assessment of all objects of the recreational facilities.
It is elucidated and characterized that in estimating the recreational potential of the territory there is a tendency to increase the complexity and integrity of such assessments: natural-geographical, and historical-cultural, and socio-economic, and the sphere of services in general. From estimates of individual natural varieties (V. Rudenko) to natural-geographical, and socio-economic assessments O. Beidick, and taking into account the recreational infrastructure, and socio-economic situation (N. Leiper, O. Lyubitseva), respectively, the base direction for assessing the recreational potential of the region in our study accepted the concept of the destination.
