Essay

The thesis is a complex study of Ukrainian, English and German phraseological units with occupational names. It is a first dissertation that elucidates the role of these names in the inner form of phraseological units within the general linguistics framework of studying the problem of interrelations between the lexical-semantic and lexical-phraseological system. The author describes semantic groups of key lexemes, which she classified in accordance with various principles as well as assessing their occurrence within Ukrainian, English and German phraseological items and analysing the latters’ structural, semantic and stylistic peculiarities; reveals the types of systemic semantic relations existing within the sets of phrasemes with trade names, the most common of which being synonymy and polysemy; analyses the inner form of idioms; traces the role of professional name in the formation of overall phrase meaning; discloses the interpretation and evaluation of professions from the viewpoint of an ethnolinguistic group; carries out cross-linguistic comparative analysis. The topicality of the thesis is determined by the fact that designations of people with respect to their place within the social relationship network as their important social feature make up an important part of any language lexis, reflecting the specific character of various social roles as well as relevant values and views of ethnical and social communities at various periods of their history.
