Essay

In the thesis the ethnographic study of Pokuttia from the 19th to 1939 has been investigated; the beginnings of ethnographic researches of Pokuttia by domestic and foreign researchers have been traced back. It has been stated as well that the process of accumulation of information about the material and spiritual culture of Pokuttians lasted during the first half of the 19th century.The research work contains analyzed folklore and ethnographic materials in the surveys of such Polish scientists as W. Zaleski, Z. Pauli, W. Wójcicki, A. Beliowski who began to collect information about Pokuttia area. Their works include brief descriptions of family and social calendars, folk stories about Opryshoks, folklore materials, demonological beliefs from Pokuttia.It is stated in the work that in the first half of the 19th century due to the activity of “The Rus Trinity” and the representatives of the secular and spiritual intelligentsia the foundations for the study and accumulation of ethnographic and folklore material were laid down, as well as the first folklore, customs and ceremonies were recorded. Y. Golovatskyi collected ethnographic and folklore material from Pokuttia territory, described traditional folk costumes.It has been proved that owing to the efforts of the “The Rus Trinity” a large number of local intelligentsia joined the study of folk culture, in particular a teacher, the first collector of folk poetry of Pokuttia H. Ilkevych, whose collection "Galician Rus Sayings and Riddles" became the first edition of national beliefs from the territory of Pokuttia.
