Essay

The research is designed to determine and compare the elements of the value picture of the world in Germanic and Slavic cultures by analyzing the axiological semantics of English, German, Russian and Ukrainian proverbs and proverbial sayings containing components to denote natural elements. The scientific novelty of the research paper is that for the first time an analysis of the axiological semantics of paremias with components to denote four elements is carried out. In addition, Slavic and Germanic value pictures of the world are compared. The paper presents a brief overview of the linguistic and philosophical concepts of the language and culture interconnection, in particular, the mechanism of the semantization of cultural information in linguistic units, provides the associative and symbolic meanings of natural elements, recorded in lexicographic sources, in particular, the dictionaries of symbols, reveals the notional characteristics of paremias as a kind of folklore text, determines the distinctive criteria of proverbs and proverbial sayings, as well as their differentiation from adjacent phenomena of phraseology (phraseologisms and book aphorisms), identifies the status of proverbs and sentences in phraseology.
