Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of life and activity of a public figure and philanthropist in Ukraine in the second half of the nineteenth century - Vasyl Vasyliovych Tarnovskyi-Jr. (1838-1899). The work reconstructs the main milestones of V. Tarnovskyi's-Jr. biography, clarifies the influence of the noble birth and the intellectual environment on the worldview and the system of public believes of the figure. Both family and class education, and later the influence of socio-cultural events in the Russian Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century played an important role in shaping the worldview and the formation of public views of V. Tarnovskyi-Jr. V. Tarnovskyi-Jr. belonged to a wealthy noble family who owned vast estates within the boundaries of the Chernihiv hubernia, therefore an important stage in the formation of his ideological benchmarks was the period when he began to be engaged in economic activity. The candidate for a degree states that V. Tarnovskyi-Jr. considered the economic well-being of his estates purely due to the sufficiency of material resources in order to ensure the effectiveness of public and collector's activities, which were the sense of his life. The money he earned was a means with the help of which he satisfied the call of his heart and this allowed him to occupy one of the leading places in the cohort of the most famous Ukrainian philanthropists and collectors. The communication with representatives of the national liberation movement of the nineteenth century influenced to a large extent the level of ideological maturity of the figure, who finally took a clear position of the priority of preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people.
