Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of the image of King Danylo Romanovich in Ukrainian cultural memory. The author covers a panorama of the images of King Rus from the beginning of their scientific invention in the second half of the XIX century, the Soviet period and the present. Memorable discourses were designed and used by various historical authors: the intellectual currents of the nineteenth century, Soviet ideologues of the party and academic type, and modern Ukrainian political, cultural and social forces. It was found out that the preservation of the stable image of "Prince Danylo Halytskyi" puts in the contemporary Ukrainians a sense of the inferiority of their own past, contributes to the spread of deliberately or unconsciously false history of the XIII century. And, besides, it is a fierce enemy on the way to modeling a new acceptable past, which should be deprived of the dubious Soviet "legacy".
