Object: the socio-cultural life of the Northern Azov region in the middle of the XIX-XX centuries; purpose: to study the peculiarities of the development of theater as a significant cultural institution in the Northern Azov region in the context of the socio-cultural life of the region from the middle of the XIX-XX centuries; methods: general scientific (analysis and synthesis, generalization, induction and deduction) and special historical (chronological, comparative historical, cultural and historical) methods; principles of historicism, objectivity and system; historical, socio-cultural, microhistorical, historical-anthropological and interdisciplinary approaches were used in the work; novelty: the theoretical and methodological foundations of the study of theater in the socio-cultural life of the Northern Azov region have been identified and characterized; proposed periodization of theatrical life of the Azov region; the activity of the Mariupol Music and Drama Theater named after Shevchenko during the German occupation; regional peculiarities of the theaters activity in the context of the socio-cultural life of the Northern Azov region; New documentary materials from the funds of central and local archives were put into scientific circulation. Received further development: the study of the regional specifics of the theatrical life of Ukraine; results: the opening of the art center «Theater inside you» at Mariupol State University, which contributes to the popularization of theatrical culture among the inhabitants of the region. The results can be the basis for further scientific research related to the study of theatrical art of Ukraine.
