Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the complex and multidimensional analysis of the trade and economic development of Podolia in the context of the political, economic and sociocultural influence of the Euro-Asian space from 1362 to 1647. The source list of this work consists of a wide range of materials diverse in origin and content. They were documents and materials from the Ukrainian archival institutions: the Central historical archive of Ukraine in Lviv, Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library and the State archive of Lublin, Poland. The part of these sources is contained in the collections of documents and scientific publications of the researchers. Also, the author introduced the previously unknown taxation register of the Bratslav voivodeship dated by 1643. The methodological basis of the thesis constitutes the principles of historicism, system analysis, generalization, objectivity, comprehensiveness, and the general historical, special-historical and general scientific methods. The stages of the introduction and distribution of land tenure in Podolia, as well as the European and Asian factors that influenced them, were revealed. The peculiarities of the development of agriculture and livestock of the Eastern and Western Podolia are determined, and the specifics of the Podolia crafts as auxiliary components of the region's economy are outlined. The importance of Podolia cities as centers of foreign and domestic trade were established, organizational-legal and functional principles of craft-shop production, handicraft-specific features of parts of Podolia land were analyzed. The research analyzed foreign policy developments of the Euro-Asian space, which, directly or indirectly, influenced the formation and progress of the internal and external trade in Podolia. It is revealed that the important role in the system of economic contacts between the West and the East were Podolia fairs. It was a place for the establishing of contacts, the conclusion of treaties, the development of credit arrangements, a zone of the active cooperation between the domestic and foreign trade. Such events occurred twice a year in the medium-sized cities and in large ones, three times or more. The fair trade depended on the specialization, the number of merchants arrived and their status. The separate place in the domestic trade of the region was given to the auctions that were held every week and ensured the cooperation along the "city-village" line. The important part of the trade and economic communications of the region constituted a network of trade routes that connected the economic centers of Podolia. The main directions of foreign trade of Podolia are described. The north-western, north-eastern and southern (Black Sea-Mediterranean) trade directions were vitally important for the region. Features of commodity flow and cooperation at the border are determined. The border status of Podolia land predetermined the emergence of smuggling in this area and led to the evasion of payment of customs duties. The trade return forced the states of the Euro-Asian space to take reasonable steps in their foreign policy relations.
